Inside California Education Episode 507: A Teaching Touchdown, Girls’ Flag Football

Discover the state’s newest high school sport: girls’ flag football. Students and coaches at Woodcreek High School in Roseville, in Placer County share their trailblazing experiences being a part of the school’s inaugural flag football team, which went undefeated.

In early 2023, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the statewide body that governs high school athletics, voted unanimously to add girls’ flag football as a statewide sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year. During this initial season, interest in the sport has been immediate and overwhelming across the state.

“They’ve picked it up super quickly for being their first time ever playing,” says Woodcreek co-head coach Jenna Talpaleti. “They’re really positive, they’re hardworking.”

A total of 11 states in the U.S. have now sanctioned girls’ flag football.
