Careers as Childcare Providers and Early Education Teachers

California faces a dramatic shortage of childcare providers and early education teachers, a situation made worse by the pandemic.

Cosumnes River College in the Los Rios Community College District in Northern California is working to address that shortage by preparing the next generation of childcare workers – as well as expanding its efforts to meet the early learning workforce need.

Jeannette Mulhern, Early Childhood Education Department Chair, says the college has been looking at offering more flexibility, online classes and family-friendly policies and practices to better meet students where they are at. There are also incentives, grants, per-unit completion stipends, zero textbook cost options, tuition reimbursement, and more – all provided to students through the Child Development Consortium.

“As a preschool teacher, I think that providing the quality care that children need is the most essential part,” says Vanessa Gutierrez, Child Development Center Teacher.

The Cosumnes River campus also offers an on-site child care facility specifically for the college’s student-parents.
